Who among us hasn’t said this or at least thought it? Not once, but many times!
Perhaps, you, like me, have an acute sense of “fairness”. When I was a teenager, I would champion for the weak and get on my soapbox to preach fairness and equity 🙂 Life seemed it continually doled out “situations” that seemed unfair to me. My Dad would say, “You need to learn, life isn’t fair.”
That really irritated me. What kind of answer is that?
So under my breath, I would respond grumpily, “Well, it should be!”
Then in my mind, I determined that when I grew up, I was going to do everything in my power to make life fair.
~
Yesterday, I saw a tweet by my good friend and hero, John Simmons. John and his wife Amy are passionately changing lives in so many ways. One way they’re combating the unfairness of life is by adopting older children in need. (Their story is truly incredible- if you want to be inspired, read his latest book- To Sing Frogs )
John’s tweet grabbed me! It said-
“Teach your kids that the world isn’t fair; not that you can make it fair.”
Awwww, come on John! You and Amy working hard to make life fair- I want to make life fair- don’t tell me that we can’t make it fair. Maybe if we all work hard enough, we can even things out somehow! 🙂
But the stark truth of that statement shook me to the core.
LIFE isn’t fair and I can’t begin to make it all fair. Better to equip our children and ourselves with the right mindset. Beginning with understanding, we live in a fallen world that’s in process of redemption.
aka Life isn’t fair but it’s Some One who is just and true is going to make it happen!.
If we don’t equip our children to understand that, they’re crippled, thinking everything should be handed to them. If we’re living thinking everything should be “fair”, we’re missing the crux of our need for redemption. If we think we can make everything “fair”, we’ll be frustrated and give up.
Better to understand that we are to do what we can to make things fair- but ultimately, only God has the Sovereign power to rule and bring equity, justice, and wholeness to His people.
But not yet- not in this life. God can/will make it fair is when the government shall be upon His shoulders. This scripture gives me such hope! Only when His kingdom comes- and His will is done, will there be justice- and fairness.
Only when the Lord Reigns will there be no more war, no more orphans, no more poverty, no more abortion, no more child abuse, no more divorce, no more sex trafficking, no more slavery, no more broken homes, no more homelessness, no more broken lives- no more injustice.
So, do we just throw up our hands and say, “Well, life isn’t fair?” and give up trying to make things better?
No!
We understand we are living in a brief period of eternity- where “life” isn’t fair. We partner with God and do what He shows us to do- showing His mercy and goodness to those around us. We are to take care of the poor, the orphaned, the widow. We are to stand up for the innocent, speak out against injustice, work hard to bring equity and fairness to the oppressed. All this while remembering, we are NOT the Savior of the world, we are His children.
Life may not be fair- but God most certainly is!
He is interceding for us, encouraging us, and working things together for our good. His love endures forever! His mercies never end. He is making all things new.
[Tweet “No, life isn’t fair. But take heart, under God- one glorious day- it’s going to be!”]
Surprising Treasures:…Revelation 21: 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” 5And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.”…
Don’t we just love that Emmanuel is making all things new, and we get to be His body through which He pours His kingdom treasure into the world – “on earth as it is in Heaven!” Halleluia! Thank you for your encouraging word, Cindy!
On earth as it is in heaven- what a wondrous day that will be- but first the labor and the delivery 🙂 Trusting in the Lord with all our heart and leaning not to our own understanding! 🙂 hugs
A long time ago I realized that when I think “my life isn’t fair,” it reveals how selfish I can be.
same here babe- when I finally pray and desire justice and joy for everyone- not just my little world- then I will have the heart of Jesus!
I think it’s very true that it’s important for parents to teach this. When going through tough times the “why” questions are often such a focus. If we already know that life isn’t always fair, but God is good then that sets us up better for using our energy to deal with the tough circumstances rather than merely to try and deal with the “unfairness” of it all Great post!
This is pretty awesome. When my heart starts to think of how unfair things are I remember a wise Pastor once said – No matter how little we think we have, we have more than we deserve.
love this!
